The Sanctuary statues

On either side of the Sanctuary, statues of saints stand in niches on carved pedestals and under elaborate canopies.

In the chancel arch there are statues of the Sacred Heart and Our Blessed Lady, their monograms are carved under the pedestals.

In the centre on the left, previously known as the Gospel side, St. Thomas of Canterbury and on the right, the Epistle side, is St. Patrick, with shamrocks carved under the pedestal.

On the main wall on the left, the statue does not have a halo but is carrying a basket containing two doves, which is an attribute of either St. Joseph, husband of the Virgin Mary, or St. Joachim, husband of St. Anne and father of the Blessed Virgin. But since there is already an altar with a statue of St. Joseph, with halo, it is assumed that the sanctuary statue is of St. Joachim. The statue on the right is St. James with his scallop shell attribute.

All the carving is by RL Boulton.
